Sound healing by handmade Buddhist Bell and popular craft 'Suzugami' workshop
Overview
Shimatani Syouryu is a workshop that has been a specialist manufacturer of orin bowl gongs for Buddhist temples since its establishment in 1909. It is said that there are less than ten craftsmen in Japan who can make an Orion (Buddhist Bell) by hammering, and the 4th generation, Mr. Yoshinori Shimatani is one of the few who can not only shape it, but also get the sound in tune.
While touring the workshop, Mr. Shimatani himself will explain the technique, and you can also work on the experience of making 'Suzugami', a small paper-like plate made of tin.

The workshop is located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and was founded in 1909 by Wakichi I, who grew up in a family of keisu (a type of Orin) craftsmen that has been handed down from generation to generation since the late Edo period. The workshop has three Orin craftsmen, of which there are less than ten in the whole of Japan, who produce the Orin by hammering the metal sheet, shaping it, and tuning the sound. The company also has its own brand 'syouryu', which proposes new items created with this 'hammering' technique.
'Suzugami' is a new product from Shimatani Shoryu Workshop, which has cultivated the technique of making Orin by hammering. Tin is a metal, but it is also a mysterious material that can be bent easily even without force. It can be folded, bent and shaped freely, so it can be used for a wide range of purposes, depending on your ideas. It can be used as a plate for serving food and sweets, as an accessory tray, etc. Please enjoy it in a variety of ways with your own ideas.
The soft tin is forged by striking it with a hammer, which beautifully reveals the pattern engraved on the tip of the hammer. Under the guidance of a craftsman, you can choose your favourite pattern and make your own original metal 'Origami' by hammering the tin yourself.
